Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at rideslikethewind63@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Over the years, horses have come from various sources, including the Bureau of Land Management for Mustangs, kill pens, unwanted horses who were given or sold to the HHH , and abandoned, sick and abused horses who were literally rescued by the shelter and saved.

Rescue horses often have problems, either due to older age, injuries, medical conditions, or neglect. Many lack training or have behavior problems. The geriatric horses need special feeds due to having few to no functional teeth (they become ground down with age), and blood sugar regulation problems. Other horses have chronic orthopedic issues and receive physical therapy, exercise and light riding.  Some horses cannot be ridden at all. Older horses or those with a tendency for lameness receive pain medication or special supplements for joint and muscle issues. Most older horses require supplemental treatments like chiropractic and Magna Wave therapy.  Many  older horses  need more  veterinary care due to chronic conditions or emergencies, like colic.

Donations are used to provide extra medical care or subsidize the purchase of special feeds and supplements.

Yes, visitors are welcome with prior notice and by permission. Please send an email to Patty Hyslop at rideslikethewind63@gmail.com

Yes.  The HHH is a 501-C nonprofit organization.

The popularity of horse breeds sometimes comes in waves. There was a wave of popularity of Icelandic horses some years back.  Icelandic horses have a few special needs and not everyone is suited to care for an Icelandic. Patty has been a well known rescuer in San Diego for over 25 years, thus people turned to her for placement and rescue. Patty took the "Icey's" in and became an expert in their training and care. Make no mistake, Icelandics are wonderful horses. Strong, fun, gaited, smart, and versatile.
